Look up, look out
Our officers are working hard to help prevent street robbery and we’ve launched an advertising campaign to tell you what you can do to make yourselves less vulnerable to the crime.
Although robbery affects many boroughs across London, Westminster has seen a large annual increase linked to tourism and people enjoying nights out in the area.
A dedicated robbery team are working in the area to disrupt robbery and associated crime in and around the West End using more stop and search, targeted plain-clothes and high-visibility patrols in hot spot areas and other tactics. Mobile phones, high value watches, cash and jewellery are the items taken most frequently in street robberies.
Mobile phone use, including use of earplugs and headphones on the go, can unfortunately also make people more at risk. Our advertising has therefore taken a deliberately ‘disruptive’ approach to encourage people to pay attention to their surroundings.
Advertising, targeting those who live and work in the areas of greatest concern, will appear in the following places:
- Bus-stop posters and tube station ads
- Digital radio
- Mobile phone advertising
- Placements in venues such as bar runners, beer mats and leaflets
The key things you can do to help prevent robbery are:
- Stay aware of your surroundings and pay attention to who’s around you.
- Keep valuables such as mobile phones, watches and cash out of sight.
- Plan your route home.
We’re working with partners to help amplify the campaign more widely, and partnerships have been established with leading night time economy and business networks.
